The first sips of water: how to help your baby learn to drink safely and comfortably

De eerste slokjes water: zo help je je baby veilig en fijn leren drinken

It's a special moment: your baby taking sips of water for the first time. This often happens around the time the first snacks are introduced. In addition to breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, your little one gradually learns new tastes, textures, and skills. One of these is drinking from a cup.

But... which cup should you choose? And what should you pay attention to?

When do babies start drinking water?

Once your baby is on solid food (usually around 6 months), you can offer them small sips of water. This isn't necessary for fluid intake, but rather to help them practice drinking, get used to using a cup, and develop their oral motor skills.

The goal in this phase is not “how much,” but how your baby learns to drink.

The best cup for learning to drink

For young babies it is important to have a cup that:

  • is easy to hold
  • does not contain any harmful substances
  • is hygienic
  • grows with your child's development
  • limit messing around (as much as possible 😉)

That's why stainless steel is one of the best choices.
